Making a Poinsettia Flower Again
A poinsettia can be made to flower again the following year but this can be difficult to achieve. You need to be strict, keep the plant in the exact conditions it needs, and make sure you stick to this routine completely if you’re going to achieve the results you want. Here are the steps to take for keeping a poinsettia alive, and encouraging it to flower for a second year:
- Keep watering the plant sparingly, making sure it isn’t too dry or too damp. If you notice leaves beginning to fall off it rapidly, you can begin to cut the stems back.
- Cut the stems back significantly by several inches. Keep watering the plant and ensuring it gets enough daylight. Pinch them at the points where they’ve been cut so as to encourage new growth.
- Give the poinsettia complete darkness. You need to do this for several hours a day, probably around 12 hours in total. Once you have finished this stage, you can encourage it to flower once more.
