Tips for Growing Sunflowers
Sunflowers are easily one of the most uplifting and eye-catching flowers you can grow. Sunflowers do require a bit of attention to ensure they grow tall and flower properly though. One of the most important things to remember, is to stake them well as their large flowers are heavy and can snap the stem if there is strong wind. Staking them also helps the grow straight. Sunflowers also enjoy rich well-fed soil so be sure to use a good quality nitrogen-based fertiliser.
Sunflowers will need a full sun area to grow in and plenty of water. They do not like to get dry and can quickly wither when not kept moist. It is important to plant sunflower seeds early, after the last frost (or better yet, starting indoors in a window or greenhouse) so that they can grow tall before blooming.
If grown properly, sunflowers will reward you with an incredible bright bloom that is well worth the effort and very attractive to pollinators.
